Mayan Ruins of Tikal
Tikal is an ancient Mayan citadel in the jungles of northern Guatemala’s Petén Province. It is thought that the Mayan civilization, inhabited here from the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century A.D. The Mayan Ruins of Tikal remain one of the largest Maya sites left in the world. The UNESCO-listed Tikal National Park was inscribed in 1979 because of both its natural and cultural criteria.

Explore the impressive architecture and ancient culture of the Mayan civilization. Much of the complex was actually reclaimed by the jungle and is still hidden to this day. The towering pyramids where kings were entombed are the centerpiece of the ancient city.
MUST DO when at the Mayan Ruins of Tikal
One of the most exciting reasons to visit Tikal is that, unlike many other Mayan sites, you are able to climb several of the temples for an unreal view of the park and the surrounding jungle. Take the sunrise tour, it is a must-do! You leave your hotel before the sun rises and hike in the dark through the jungle. Next, you climb the iconic Jaguar Temple and sit in silence listening to the wildlife and birds waking up while you watch the world change colour from the heights of the temple.

Since Tikal is found in the heart of the jungle you will come across all sorts of tropical species including spider monkeys, howler monkeys, coatimundis (coatis), scarlet macaws, toucans, parrots, peacocks and if you are very lucky even a jaguar
Where Next?
When planning a visit to Tikal be sure to include a night or two at the quaint little town of Flores. Flores Island is found an hour south of Tikal in Peten. The colourful town of Flores is the ideal base before and after your expeditions to the Mayan world hidden in the jungle of Guatemala.
