Guatemala
Guatemala is a small country in Central America bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador with coastlines on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Home to volcanoes, rainforests, beaches and many ancient Mayan sites.
Lake Atitlán, is an enormous volcanic crater lake surrounded by stunning volcano peaks and home to 11 ethnic villages, all slightly different and filled with culture. Locals still wear traditional dress in the villages.
Nestled in the jungle region of Guatemala is the ancient site of Tikal, one of the most important archaeological complexes left by the Maya civilization and one of the best Mayan ruins to visit. The ancient temples and archaeological sites found in Tikal National Park are most impressive.
One of the most exciting reasons to visit Tikal is that, unlike many other Mayan sites, you are able to climb several of the temples. Once at the top you will be rewarded with an unreal view of the park and the surrounding jungle.
Watching a morning sunrise over the Mayan ruins is much about the journey, as it is about the sunrise. You are guided through the rainforest in the dark. As dawn begins you climb up to the top of the temple and sit quietly waiting for the sun. The jungle starts to come life and day begins. The sounds and smells of the jungle are amazing.
Guatemala is the birthplace of chocolate: the word chocolate comes from the Mayan “Chocol’haa.”
