Amazon River
The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by the volume of water it carries and at 6516km long it’s the second-longest river in the world. It flows through the tropical rainforests of South America, mainly in Brazil. Its source is found in the Andes Mountains of Peru, on the western edge of South America and flows eastward into the Atlantic Ocean near the equator on the East coast of Brazil. Because of the high levels of sediment, the river carries downstream the river is a muddy brown colour.
LOCATION
The river flows through Peru and Brazil, but its tributaries (smaller rivers that merge into it) drain vast areas of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia too.
WILDLIFE
The Amazon River is home to the endangered pink river dolphin and home to over 2,00 species of fish such as the Electric Eel, Red-Bellied Piranha and the Vampire Fish. The largest snake in the world, the Green Anaconda also lives in the Amazon River and yes there are crocodiles, well of species of. The Black Caiman is a ferocious species of crocodile. They are associated with the highest number of predatory attacks on humans by an animal in South America.
In the surrounding jungle, you may find jaguars, sloths, black spider monkeys, red howler monkeys, capybaras (the world’s largest rodent), giant armadillos, great river otters, ocelots, pumas, pygmy marmosets, tapirs, poison dart frogs and of course giant tarantulas

The jungle city of Iquitos in the north of Peru is the point of departure for cruise ships destined for the Amazon waterways. Cruise the Amazon River, make friends with local communities, swim with pink river dolphins, and walk under the canopy tree homes for flitting birds, sleeping sloths and noisy monkeys.
